2012 Annual Report 1a.Objectives (from AD-416): Make crosses and test wheat lines for resistance to Septoria tritici blotch in the field or greenhouse. Test resistance genes for durability when exposed to Indiana populations of the pathogens in the field. 1b.Approach (from AD-416): Crosses will be made between resistant and susceptible lines of wheat and progenies developed to test the mode of inheritance of new or unknown resistance genes. Field testing of resistance will be performed by planting hill plots or small test plots and allowing for natural infection or by inoculating with specific Indiana isolates of the pathogen depending on the experiment. Plants will be scored for disease reaction and resistant lines retained for future analysis. 3.Progress Report: The goal of the research is to make crosses and do field testing of resistance to the Septoria pathogens of wheat, Mycosphaerella graminicola and Stagonospora nodorum. Some crosses between resistant and susceptible parents have been made and progeny are being grown in greenhouses. Due to the unusually hot, dry weather this spring it was not possible to conduct effective field tests so those were postponed until next year.
