1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To determine the potential benefits to specialty crop production from the use of biochar amendments as well as the potential uptake of volatile organics from the biochar by the specialty crop.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Greenhouse and limited field plot research.
This was the last year of this agreement with Pennsylvania State University, and the following items have been initiated:
1. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments on the impact of biochar in specialty crop production were conducted. Comparisons were also made to carbon black materials as a reference. Difference surface modifications were also performed to assess the difference between the carbon black, biochar, and soil control incubations.
2. The surface chemistry characteristics of several biochars were determined, which permitted the quantification of the hybridization states of the carbon atoms on the biochar. This enabled an estimate of the variability in the surface chemistry groups (e.g., carboxylic acids, ketones, alkenes, alkynes). These results are being compiled into a manuscript detailing these findings.
This project relates directly to Objective 1 of the parent research project.
