2013 Annual Report
1)Mosquito screening bioassays: NCNPR's and ARS scientists have screened more than 180 extracts/pure compounds in mosquito larval bioassays for this reporting period (1,450 over the course of the entire program). Further screening of the active products was completed at lower dosages. Dose response bioassays were completed for more than 150 compounds/extracts against 1-day old mosquito larvae and more than 50 compounds/extracts were tested against 4-day old mosquito larvae. .
2)More than 325 extracts/ natural products were evaluated to determine the biting deterrence effects of these compounds using Klun & Debboun (K & D) modules over the past year (1,225 samples over the course of the entire program). Out of these products, replicated bioassays were completed for more than 100 extracts/compounds for publications. .
3)Lastly, NCNPR's and ARS' scientists have developed topical bioassay system for adult mosquitoes and fire ant repellency and are in the process of developing a bioassay system to test the repellency of natural products against mosquitoes. With continued funding it is anticipated that significant progress can be made to identify a leading natural product based candidate for the development of an insect management product.
