2012 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To characterize contemporary FMDV strains collected from various regions of Russia by ARRIAH in ARRIAH laboratories.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
ARRIAH will characterize contemporary FMDV strains collected from various regions in Russia. The characterization will be conducted by ARRIAH in ARRIAH laboratories and results summarized in a submitted report to ARS and DHS. If possible, successfully characterized FMDV strains will be shipped to DHS, PIADC for use in the DHS FMD countermeasure program. ARRIAH will complete the milestones and deliverables summarized below to support the DHS S&T Chemical/Biological Division, Agriculture Security Thrust Area. The work effort covers the 1 year period following the award date.
During the first year of this project, ARRIAH reported that they have completed work on Milestone 1 “Refresh FMDV bovine field isolate by low passage cell cultivation;” and 2 “Reisolate FMDV bovine field isolates following experimental infection in two cows and characterization of clinical disease for at least 10 days following experimental infection” for FMDV strains outlined in the agreement. They also conducted work on Milestone 3: “VP1 region and bioinformatics analysis on each of animal derived working stocks obtained in Milestone 2.” Based on discussions with DHS, ARS amended the project agreement to extend it in time until September 1, 2013 with additional funds. ARS, ARRIAH and DHS also agreed to an updated priority list of FMDV strains to be characterized.
