Research Project: FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE VIRUS (FMDV) STRAIN CHARACTERIZATION
2013 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To characterize contemporary FMDV strains collected from various regions of Russia by ARRIAH in ARRIAH laboratories.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
ARRIAH will characterize contemporary FMDV strains collected from various regions in Russia. The characterization will be conducted by ARRIAH in ARRIAH laboratories and results summarized in a submitted report to ARS and DHS. If possible, successfully characterized FMDV strains will be shipped to DHS, PIADC for use in the DHS FMD countermeasure program. ARRIAH will complete the milestones and deliverables summarized below to support the DHS S&T Chemical/Biological Division, Agriculture Security Thrust Area. The work effort covers the 1 year period following the award date.

3.Progress Report:

ARRIAH completed the three milestones outlined in the agreement with ARS and submitted technical reports including data from those studies, which was then shared with DHS for review and feedback. Studies were conducted based on the agreed upon priority list of FMD strains. Milestone 1: ARRIAH conducted a revival of bovine FMDV field isolates by low passage cell cultivation. Milestone 2: included re-isolation of identified FMDV bovine field isolates (Asia-1 ¿2000/Khabarovsky/2005, Asia-1 ¿2001/Amursky/2005, Asia-1 ¿2008/Amursky/2006) following experimental infection in five cows and characterization of clinical disease for 10 days following experimental infection. Milestone 3: ARRIAH scientists focused on the VP1 region and conducted a bioinformatics analysis on each of animal derived working stocks (As1/Amursky/2005, As1/Khabarovsky/2005, As1/Amursky/2006) obtained in Milestone 2.
