1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To produce a potato seedling generation to support research on development of new potato cultivars.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
True seeds origination from hypernization performed by the Beltsville potato breeding program will be sent to NCSU for minituber production.
Approximately 10,000 seedling tubers were produced in support of the ARS Potato Breeding Program in Beltsville, MD. About 40% of these included tubers for round white chip varietal development combined with late blight and/or PVY resistance. Approximately 20% were various tuber skin and flesh colors bred for specialty markets, and the remaining 40% involved crosses between S. tuberosum and S. albicans or S. iopetulum to improve nitrogen uptake efficiency. This research provides the genetic material for each new cycle of the breeding program and for genetic studies. This research benefits potato breeders and growers by providing genetic materials from which new varieties will be selected.
