Research Project: Use of Flue Gas Desulfurization Gypsum (FGDG) to Improve Crop and Forage Production on Erodible Soils of the South

Location: National Soil Dynamics Laboratory

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To Determine guidelines for agricultural uses of FGD-Gypsum.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Field and greenhouse research projects will be conducted to determine the appropriate rates, methods, and frequency of FGD gypsum applications in agriculture systems. Studies will be conducted to determine the suitability of FGD gypsum in horticulture production. Field sites will be used to determine FGD gypsum use in turf grass fertility.

3.Progress Report:

This research project was initiated to evaluate the use of flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum as soil amendment to improve plant and soil quality. Influences of FGD gypsum on soil physical properties affecting water infiltration, water conservation, and turf grass and horticulture production are being investigated. This study is evaluating proper rate of FGD gypsum needed to maintain horticulture and turf grass yields. Forage cuttings on three turf grass sites were collected 3 times throughout the growing season in 2011. Treatment effects on soil and plant samples are in the process of being determined for each cutting. Studies on greenhouse production of petunia, geraniums, tomatoes, and long leaf pine were also initiated. The ADODR has monitored activities via email and telephone correspondence, collaborator meetings, and site visits.
