Research Project: BREEDING SOYBEANS WITH HIGH OLEIC ACID WITH BACK-CROSSING AND MARKER-ASSISTED SELECTION

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6645-21220-012-38
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 01, 2011
End Date: Mar 31, 2012

Objective:
1) Development of soybean lines with the following oleic acid gene/QTL combinations in a G00-3213 background: i) FAD2-1a (M23) + FAD2-1b (PI 283327) + QTL-G1 (N00-3350), ii) FAD2-1a (M23) + FAD2-1b (PI 283327) + QTL-L2 (N00-3350), and iii) FAD2-1a + FAD2-1b + QTL-G1 (N00-3350) + QTL-L2 (N00-3350). 2) Obtain at least two backcrosses per year for each of the recurrent parents provided by the breeders in AR, GA, MO, NC, and TN.

Approach:
Objective 1: Year 1: We will cross a backcross 5 derived line of G00-3213 that is homozygous for the N00-3350 alleles at QTL-G1 and QTL-L2 with a backcross 2 derived line of G00-3213 that is homozygous for the FAD2-1a allele from M23 and the FAD2-1b allele from PI 283327. Objective 2: The University of Georgia molecular breeding laboratory will provide DNA marker data collection for breeders in Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, southern Missouri, and Tennessee. The University of Georgia breeding program will utilize the above described marker-assisted backcrossing approach to create elite GROUP VII backcross derived lines of G00-3213 (conventional variety) and G00-3880 (convention breeding line) along with a RR2Y and Liberty Link backcross-derived varieties of G00-3213 and G00-3880.
