Research Project: Analyses of Corn Samples for Mycotoxins

Location: Biological Control of Pests Research Unit

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The purpose of this reimbursable cooperative agreement is to analyze corn samples for mycotoxin especially aflatoxin formulation trials for two strains of non-toxigenic Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus), K 49 & NRRL 21882.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Several Corn Samples will be delivered by Syngenta and tested in an ARS laboratory using HPLC or LC/MS method. The following procedures and tasks will be carried out by USDA and Syngenta personnel: Syngenta will deliver to Investigator one combined sample per plot. ARS Investigator will grind, subsample and determine Aflatoxin levels for four major strains.

3.Progress Report

Field samples (1314), including corn, peanuts, and cotton, were received in fall of 2010 and analyzed for aflatoxins; some were also analyzed for fumonisins by High Performance Liquid Chromatography and/or Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Fungal isolations of Aspergillus flavus strains were isolated from several samples. All data and results were reported to Syngenta. Monitoring of this project continues through frequent visits, and telephone and e-mail communications.
