Conduct seed increase of 400 lines of an association mapping population in Year 1 and conduct a drought study on a subset of the same lines in Year 2
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Four-row plots of each entry will be grown under irrigation in the field in 2009. Harvested samples will be cleaned and distrbuted to researcher in early 2010. The drought study will be conducted in Prosser, WA, at 50% water deficit using a randomized complete block design.
A drought study consisting of 98 lines, with two treatments and two replications were harvested in October 2011. Under sub-objective 1B of the related in-house project, "Develop dry bean germplasm with enhanced disease and/or abiotic stress resistance using MAS in combination with traditional breeding approaches", significant progress was made in characterizing a mapping population for drought tolerance. Agronomic traits and yield were recorded for the 492 plots. Seed from the 492 plots were shipped to ARS-Baylor for mineral analysis. SNP analysis in collaboration with ARS-Beltsville and University of Saskatchewan generated markers linked with the slow darkening trait in pinto bean.
