Climate change, particularly temperature and carbon dioxide is altering weed demographics in managed and unmanaged plant systems. The objective of the current research is to determine the vegetative and reproductive response of short day annual weeds to these aspects of climate change.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Working with Rutgers University, we will grow a number of annual short-day weeds utilizing a projected range of carbon dioxide concentrations and temperatures, and quantify both growth rate and pollen production. Data will be utilized to characterize weed demographics in a changing climate.
Weed seed of three short day annual weeds, common ragweed, mugwort, and English plantain were obtained from Herbiseed Corporation. Germination trials were conducted on all seed lots. Delivery and installation of two new climate controlled growth chambers was accomplished. Initial trials of chambers were conducted, and initial problems in heating and cooling identified. Initial CO2 trial has been completed, and now a CO2 by temperature interaction trial is underway. Climate projections regarding temperature and CO2 are being determined via the A1FI intensification model as determined from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 report. Trials for one of the annual weeds (English plantain) are complete, and the final trials for mugwort and ragweed are underway. Pollen from all treatments for the latter two weeds will be given to Forest Service, who will use the pollen for allergenic testing.
