Research Project: ABATEMENT OF PHENOLIC AND INDOLIC VOC EMISSIONS FOR ODOR CONTROL AT ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS

Location: Environmental Management Research

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Develop and optimize the effectiveness of bioremediation techniques for the abatement of odorous compounds in CAFO wastewater. Optimize the effectiveness of genetically modified yeast for abatement of odorous compounds. Evaluate a non-GMO based anaerobic bioreactor with complementary attributes.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
A continuous flow bioreactor will be fabricated, optimized, and tested based upon genetically modified Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Baker’s yeast) displaying horseradish peroxidase (HRP). HPLC methods will be used for liquid phase quantification of phenolic and indolic odorants, and for CAFO manure lagoon and bioreactor performance optimization and evaluation. Effectiveness of the odor control and VOC remediation will be measured using GC/MS and thermal desorption tubes.

3.Progress Report

Originally awarded to West Texas A&M University, this AFRI grant project was transferred to ARS in early 2011 following the principal investigator’s employment with ARS in March, 2010. Since that time, ARS scientists have initiated collaborative research with Iowa State University and a Kansas firm to evaluate peroxidase enzyme products for the reduction of odor emissions from swine manure. Laboratory experiments have been conducted to optimize the amount of horseradish peroxidase or soybean peroxidase required for odor control, with more experiments planned for fall 2011.
