Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF CP SUGARCANE CULTIVARS FOR FLORIDA

Location: Sugarcane Production Research

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The development of new disease-resistant high-yielding sugarcane cultivars specifically adapted for Florida.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Cross superior sugarcane to produce "true-seed", germinate in greenhouse and transplant individual seedlings (clones) to field. Evaluate and select superior high-yielding disease-resistant sugarcane clones in multi-year trials in a tri-party cooperative program on ARS and on grower farm locations and to vegetatively increase seedcane of the seeded clones.

3.Progress Report

This research relates to the in house objective 1: Develop more efficient breeding and selection methodologies for cultivar development and to produce seed of selected sugarcane germplasm for use in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.

As a result of these cooperative efforts of the above parties six new sugarcane cultivars, CPCL 02-1295 and CP 02-0926 for sand and muck soils, CPCL 95-2287 for muck and CP 04-1566, CP 04-1844 and CP 04-1935 for sand soil were recommended for release for Florida. Those cultivars will offer Florida sugarcane growers more options to the presently grown cultivars.

Progress was monitored via personal contacts, emails and telephone contacts on a monthly basis, as well as, multiple informal meetings and two formal meetings during the year.
