Research Project: GENETIC EVALUATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF BEEF CATTLE ADAPTED TO THE SUBTROPICAL U.S.A. Project Number: 6619-31630-003-03
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 01, 2010
End Date: Jun 06, 2012

Objective:
1. Evaluate Brahman cattle for reproductive efficiency, carcass traits and feed efficiency. 2. Improve the breed for those traits through genetic selection.

Approach:
Researchers at both Texas AgriLife Research at Overton (TxAR) and USDA ARS STARS have mutual interests in evaluating Brahman cattle for adaptation to subtropical environments and for production efficiency. They will collaborate in developing herds with diversity in reproductive status, carcass traits and feed efficiency to determine genetic potential and methodology for improving these traits. TxAR will make available to STARS select females for flushing to provide rapid development of the STARS herd and will from time to time make available females from their advanced selection herd females for purchase. Both teams will exchange data to improve statistical inference of the research results.
