Research Project: COLLECTION OF A MAIZE WILD RELATIVE, ZEA LUXURIANS, IN SOUTHEAST GUATEMALA FOR EX SITU CONSERVATION

Location: National Germplasm Resources

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To obtain germplasm of a maize wild relative, Zea luxurians, for conservation in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Germplasm of a wild relative of maize, Zea luxurians, will be collected in Guatemala. Acquisition of germplasm will comply with all Guatemalan laws governing foreign access to genetic resources. Germplasm will be collected in the form of seeds and will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description, and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Samples of germplasm and associated documentation will be shared between Guatemala and the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.

3.Progress Report

A plant exploration to collect germplasm of a wild relative of maize (corn) in Guatemala was planned. This exploration is now scheduled to be conducted in November 2011. Monitoring of the project was accomplished through e-mails and phone calls.
