As part of the AFRI grant project, ARS scientists at Clay Center, Nebraska have collaborated with Iowa State University, University of Nebraska, and the Kansas firm of Bio-Research Products Inc. to evaluate peroxidase enzyme products for the reduction of odor emissions from swine manure. The project includes the evaluation of soybean-byproduct additives made from ground soybean hulls. Laboratory experiments have been conducted to optimize the amount of soybean peroxidase required for odor control. Soybean peroxidase was effective at reducing odorous chemical emissions from swine manure by 68 to 81 percent. Calcium peroxide was 36 percent more effective than hydrogen peroxide. The research has resulted in awarding of additional grant funds from the National Pork Board for further development in commercial operations.
