Research Project: ABATEMENT MEASURES FOR REDUCING ODOR, VOC, AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS

Location: Environmental Management Research

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To develop abatement alternatives for reducing odor and volitile organic compounds (VOC) emissions from animal feeding operations.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Manure additives including enzymes of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and soybean peroxidase (SBP) will be added to wastewater from swine and beef feeding lagoons at varying hydrogen peroxide concentrations. Headspace samples will be analyzed for VOC and greenhouse gas concentrations. VOC and greenhouse gas emission rates and treatment effectiveness will be quantified and reported.

3.Progress Report

This project was established to support Project No. 5438-41630-001-05R, which is an AFRI grant with NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE (NIFA).

As part of the AFRI grant project, ARS scientists have initiated collaborative research with Iowa State University and a Kansas firm to evaluate peroxidase enzyme products for the reduction of odor emissions from swine manure. The project includes the evaluation of soybean-byproduct additives made from ground soybean hulls. Several laboratory experiments have been conducted to optimize the amount of horseradish peroxidase or soybean peroxidase required for odor control.

The ADODR monitors the Specific Cooperative Agreement with routine emails and conference calls with the Iowa State University principal investigator, and with monthly face-to-face meetings with the Iowa State University visiting scientist.
