1)sprayers and methods used to make treatments for vector pest control in military settings; and.
2)the current methodology/protocols used to evaluate the efficacy of field-applied sprays. In FY 2012, additional spray equipment of several types was evaluated for spray droplet size utilizing protocols previously developed by project work. Over the life of this project, more than 80 pieces of sprayer equipment were evaluated for spray droplet size. Each sprayer was tested using generic spray solutions across the full operational ranges of spray pressure, nozzle setting, and flow rate. The data from these tests were provided to the cooperator and also incorporated into smartphone applications that were made available to the public. Using aircraft from the U.S. Air Force in Youngstown, Ohio, field trials were conducted in conjunction with personnel from the U.S. Navy Entomology Center of Excellence and ARS scientists from Gainesville, Florida. These field trials focused on measurement of spray movement and insect mortality in an open field and within vegetative canopies. In other FY 2012 work, rotary atomizers were evaluated and optimized in the High Speed Wind Tunnel facility maintained by the parent project to determine atomizer settings and associated droplet sizes generated at a simulated aircraft flight speed of 220 mph. This project expired in FY 2012, but related work is being continued under the sister project 6202-022000-028-13R.
