1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Strengthen the collaborations between ARS and Kansas State University (K-State) in areas of mutual interest through cooperative research programs and exchanges, and to jointly to explore and coordinate research activities of mutual interest within the broad scope of animal health and plant health research conducted in Kansas.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Encourage and facilitate direct contacts among appropriate institutions and specialists and work toward long-term cooperation in agricultural research and development programs focused on protecting America’s food animals (livestock) and food crops (grain) from foreign and domestic disease threats.
This project covers collaborative research conducted between scientists at the USDA-ARS Center for Grain and Animal Health Research and Kansas State University. Broad areas of research include: (a) arthropod-vectored animal diseases including virology, entomology, veterinary medicine, and high containment operations; (b) engineering specifically related to grain handling, sorting, storage and quality; soil science and modeling technology as it relates to the impact, mechanism and mitigation strategies for wind erosion; (c) chemistry and food technology in the evaluation of cereal grains, flour and processed products; (d) plant pathology, entomology and plant physiology related to wheat and the discovery and use of genes with resistance to specific constraints; and (e) the biology and management of stored product insect pests.
