Control of Zoonotic Avian Viruses
Exotic and Emerging Avian Viral Diseases Research Unit
2012 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this cooperative research project is to jointly study avian influenza viruses, paramyxoviruses, pneumoviruses and other viral agents of poultry that potential can cross between birds and humans.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
The studies will use immunological, virological, molecular, genetic, and pathological methodologies and animal models to study the pathogenesis, immunology, vaccine safety and efficacy, therapeutics and epidemiology of the viruses and infections they cause.
This project is related to objective 5 of this in-house project: Develop new vaccine platforms designed to control and prevent avian influenza virus outbreaks.
During FY2012, ARS provided the cooperator with three H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza viruses from Egypt and four reassortant H5 and H7 vaccine viruses to be used in vaccine studies.
