1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop high-yielding low phytic acid basmati rice in Pakistan.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Alleles which impart the low phytic acid trait in rice will be isolated from mutagenized populations of Pakistani rices. Using conventional methods, these will be used to breed high yielding low phytic acid rices for production in Pakistan.
This work contributes to the parent project component 3, Crop Biological and Molecular Processes, Problem 3A, Fundamental Knowledge of plant biological and molecular processes. The traits in question concern the nutritional quality of seed crops. The parent project focuses on the genetics of plant and seed phosphorus and phytic acid. Both the total amount of phosphorus and its chemistry are critically important to the end-use quality of grain and legume crops. The USDA-ARS participant is one of the world-leaders in this specific field. Its participation in this project was requested due to its knowledge and technical capacity in this specific field. There was substantial communication and research planning activity, including grant writing, in this project year.
