To evaluate, characterize, and improve common bean genetics for biological nitrogen fixation.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
ARS will acquire germplasm, conduct field studies, and perform genetic analysis; WSU will provide graduate student support and expertise on characterization of soils and rhizobium strains.
Fifty-one dry bean genotypes representing parental lines of mapping populations, super-nodulating and non-nodulating checks, and lines from the literature were tested in the field and laboratory in Prosser and Pullman, Washington, respectively, in 2011 for traits related to biological nitrogen efficiency.
This project relates to Objective 1b of the in-house project, with the goal of breeding germplasm with improved tolerance to low soil fertility.
Research progress was monitored by person-to-person contacts or phone conversations with the collaborators to review work plans and progress reports on a quarterly basis.
