1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Objective 1: To establish a baseline for susceptibility of tarnished plant bug populations in the Mississippi Delta to novaluron.
Objective 2: To monitor tarnished plant bug populations over a three-year period for potential shifts in susceptibility due to increased exposure in cotton and other crops.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Baseline susceptibility to novaluron will be determined using glass-vial bioassays with tarnished plant bug adults collected from weed hosts found near cotton fields at 10-20 locations in the Mississippi Delta. Tarnished plant bug populations will continue to be monitored for a three-year period for potential shifts in susceptibility caused by increased exposure to novaluron.
In 2011, ten populations of tarnished plant bugs from Mississippi and Arkansas were screened against novaluron in a glass vial dose-mortality bioassay. While laboratory responese were variable, no differences were observed among the ten populations, and none differed from the check (a population from Crossett, AR, in a non-agricultural area). Four populations have been tested in 2012, and laboratory responese are have not differed among populations, nor have they changed from initial 2011 observations. Additional populations will be collected and evaluated against novaluron during this season. These results suggest that most tarnished plant bug populations in the Mid-South should be susceptible to novaluron.
