2011 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Determine magnitude of the residues of pesticides in minor crops and conduct other residue studies as appropriate in support of registration petitions submitted to EPA by IR-4. Work primarily with reduced-risk compounds to replace uses that continue to be lost due to the tolerance reassessment mandated by the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) of 1996.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
All work will be in compliance with 40 CFR Part 160, "Good Laboratory Practice Standards." Analytical methodology, Standard Operating Procedures, and GLP documentation will be updated for the project as needed. Priorities and assigments of crop/pesticide combintations for analysis are determined at an annual meeting. Crop samples will be obtained from IR-4 Field Projects and analyzed by methods approved by EPA. Laboratory residue data and all required documentation will be reported to IR-4 Headquarters.


3.Progress Report
At the request of growers, pesticide residue research was conducted on pesticide/crop combinations (projects) to address specific insect, weed, and plant disease problems on minor crops. During fiscal year 2011, the Tifton Interregional Research Project No. 4 (IR-4) Laboratory located at the Crop Protection and Management Research Unit, Tifton, GA, initiated or continued pesticide residue analyses on samples from 9 projects covering 56 field trials conducted throughout the United States by ARS and NIFA field cooperators. Work was completed and final reports submitted to IR-4 Headquarters for another 10 projects covering 53 field trials: the fungicide propiconazole on stone fruits and watercress; the fungicide tebuconazole on cantaloupe, greens (mustard), and watercress; the herbicide imazosulfuron on cantaloupe and potato; the insecticide permethrin on collard and tomato; and the insecticide pyriproxyfen on papaya. EPA will establish pesticide residue tolerances based on this data so the growers of these crops will have the pest control tools that they requested. The laboratory also agreed to receive samples from 4 new projects covering 17 field trials during current year 2011. Samples from another 9 projects covering 57 field trials were transferred to the laboratory to be held in freezer storage. A new walk-in freezer with a backup natural gas generator and temperature monitoring/recording/alarming/reporting system was installed.
