1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Produce better annotation of Asian citrus psyllid genome, Diaphorina citri, by producing a deep sequencing run.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Using psyllid DNA and RNA, as provided by ARS, conduct a deep sequencing run to aid validation and fill gaps in alignments for psyllid genome.
This research is related to inhouse project objectives 2. Biological Control: Develop new and improve existing biological control methods for psyllids and sharpshooter species; and 3b. Develop novel control methods based on disrupting key processes in pest biology.
Genomics provides insights into insect biology, pathology, and management. The Asian citrus psyllid genome is the first genome from any psyllid species. The 26,000 transcripts identified by deep sequencing are now being used by the larger research community to develop advanced psyllid pest management. One such advance has been in the field of RNA-interference, which disrupts gene expression. Genetic disruption has been shown to work in psyllids and holds promise as a future pest management strategy.
