Location: Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research Unit

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The objective is to establish a formal written commitment (memorandum of understanding) between Iowa State University (ISU) and the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) to develop joint initiatives of common strategic interest in the areas of microbial ecology in food and agriculture; animal health in domestic and livestock species; and biotechnology development and bioinformatics.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
NADC and ISU will identify expert staff to develop joint research projects in the areas of microbial ecology in food and agriculture; animal health in domestic and livestock species; and biotechnology development and bioinformatics.

3.Progress Report

NADC purchased Illumina HiSeq 2000 next-generation sequencer for use by NADC, United States Department of Agriculture, and ISU research communities. Agreement negotiated with ISU to operate sequencer as a service through the ISU Biotechnology Core. Over $50K of sequencing has been booked since one instrument became operational in mid FY11. A specific joint NADC and ISU research project commenced sequencing of the bison genome for comparative immunology and health research between bison and cattle. Progress is monitored by regular e-mails, phone calls and site visits.
