Research Project: Memorandum of Understanding: Promote Animal Health Initiatives with Iowa State University
2013 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective is to establish a formal written commitment (memorandum of understanding) between Iowa State University (ISU) and the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) to develop joint initiatives of common strategic interest in the areas of microbial ecology in food and agriculture; animal health in domestic and livestock species; and biotechnology development and bioinformatics.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
NADC and ISU will identify expert staff to develop joint research projects in the areas of microbial ecology in food and agriculture; animal health in domestic and livestock species; and biotechnology development and bioinformatics.

3.Progress Report:

In FY13, a research service agreement (RSA) was established with the ISU Office of Biotechnology Genome Informatics Facility. The RSA was set up for the use of the ISU Lightning 3 Supercomputer to analyze and store bioinformatics data generated by researchers in the NADC Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research Unit. General introductory and training sessions on the use of the ISU Lightning 3 Supercomputer were given by PhD computer bioinformatist at ISU in October and November 2012. Experimental designs were discussed with this person. Metagenomic and metatranscriptomics datasets from swine research projects conducted at the NADC were supplied to ISU during November through January of FY13.
