Research Project: COOPERATIVE EVALUATION OF SOYBEAN LINES FOR RUST RESISTANCE IN PARAGUAY

Location: Crop Genetics Research Unit

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Facilitate cooperative research between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Instituto Paraguayo De Tecnologia Agraria - IPTA identifying and developing rust resistant soybean lines.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Collaborator research units have been identified at national research institutions in both Paraguay and the U.S. who will conduct this research. These include the Centro Regional de Investigación Agrícola (CRIA) in the Instituto Paraguayo de Tecnolgia Agraria (IPTA) and the Crop Genetics Research Unit of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The research is directed toward identifying new sources of resistance, development and phenotyping of segregating genetic populations and the development, phenotyping and testing of resistant breeding lines.

3.Progress Report

In this reporting period, field and greenhouse experiments were established at the IPTA research station Centro Regional de Investigación Agrícola (CRIA), in Capitán Miranda, Paraguay. Experiments included yield tests with and without fungicides, evaluation of breeding lines for rust resistance and evaluation of genetic populations segregating for rust resistance. The data has been collected and is now being analyzed. ADODR used site visit, email and telephone conferences to monitor activities of the project.
