Research Project: CLIMATE VARIABILITY AND CHANGE IN CENTRAL OKLAHOMA

Location: Great Plains Agroclimate and Natural Resources Research Unit

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Collaborate with Oklahoma Mesonet on climate monitoring, research, and applications related to climate variability and change.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
A site for weather and groundwater monitoring will be maintained at the Grazinglands Research Laboratory as part of the Oklahoma Mesonet. This site will support individual research applications related to microclimate. Meso-scale research and applications will draw from the state-wide network of monitoring sites to evaluate hydrologic and agricultural management options.

3.Progress Report

A station for monitoring weather and climate was operated and maintained by Oklahoma Mesonet staff at the El Reno site. Data are published in real-time on the Oklahoma Mesonet website. During the May 24, 2011, tornado, the station recorded the highest wind speed in the Mesonet history, 151 mph. The ADODR monitored progress of the project through telephone conversations and emails and reviewed monthly electronic quality reports.
