Commercial Evaluation of Alternative Protein Diets and Selected Rainbow Trout Stocks
Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research
2011 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Objectives of this research are to develop improved diet formulations and rainbow trout stocks that meet the economic and growth requirements of commercial aquaculturists by: formulating and testing sustainable plant-based diets and evaluating selected rainbow trout families.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
This research performed under institutional biosafety policies will benefit commercial aquaculturists, by improving formulations for commercial diets by testing the plant-based sustainable diets in a commercial setting. Rainbow trout selected for growth on these diets will also be evaluated for production traits in a commercial setting and tested for incorporation into the facilities broodstock.
This research relates to objective 3, "Determine nutritional value of alternative ingredients (protein, lipid, energy)and develop practical feed formulations for improved strains of fish", objective 5, "Use gene expression analyses to advance the understanding of gene targets for improving nutrition, growth, and development processes under production conditions", and objective 6, "Identify phenotypic differences in rainbow trout for growth and utilization of plant-based sustainable diets and determine the genetic variation for the identified traits", of the parent project. This project involves a commercial evaluation of alternative protein diets and select strains of trout. The project is progressing smoothly and work is being conducted in 3 locations. Diet and genetic trait studies are being conducted using Clear Springs Foods (CSF) ingredients and ARS produced fish stocks for in-house studies. Similar and parallel studies are being conducted at the Clear Springs Research Facility and production farms. Several alternative ingredients show potential for inclusion in the CSF closed-formula feed. Identified markers for traits of commercial interest have been identified or are being evaluated for incorporation into trait selection. Improved families of trout from the ARS, Trout-Grains project are being tested and incorporated into the CSF broodstock. Communication and coordination was achieved through frequent site visits, emails, and phone conversations.
