Objective:
1. Determine the effectiveness of aerosol applications of pesticides for control of adult sand flies in a desert environment. 2. If possible, determine the effectiveness of aerosol applications of pesticides for control of adult mosquitoes in a desert environment. 3. If possible, perform collections of museum-quality mosquito specimens and DNA of as great a variety of species as possible in the Balkans, with representative specimens and types deposited at the U.S. National Museum. 4. If possible, participate in studies of fly control in Thessaloniki, Greece. 5. Publish all suitable results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Approach:
The University of Florida will station and supervise a post-doc at the USDA ARS European Biological Control Laboratory, Thessaloniki, Greece. The post-doc will design and conduct trials of U.S. military stocklisted pesticides for ULV and/or thermal fog application (www.afpmb.org), as well as other products that appear to have promise for the purpose of control of phlebotomine sand flies in a desert environment in any suitable country. Assays may include caged insects, but must include measurements of natural populations with an appropriate monitoring device. Ancillary measurements such as non-target effects, drift, and control of mosquitoes will be at the post-doc’s discretion. Working from the base in Thessaloniki, the post-doc will have the opportunity to collect museum-quality mosquito specimens (www.wrbu.edu) and their DNA from throughout the Balkans, often in conjunction with surveys performed by the laboratory for biological control agents. Specimens will be prepared and labeled, then shipped primarily to the U.S. National Museum. If possible, the post-doc will develop an agreement with a Greek institution and/or local institutions in the countries of collection for deposition of representative specimens in a reliable local museum. Finally, as time permits, the post-doc will assist in the design and conduct of trials to control filth flies, primarily at the American Farm School, Thessaloniki, Greece. All work will be conducted in such a way that data can be summarized in scientific, peer-reviewed publications.
