1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To improve our understanding sorghum origination and domestication process and as well as identify genomic regions responsible for the important agronomic traits in domesticated sorghum.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
For this study, different landrace accessions and various representative breeding lines and cultivars will be collected from diverse geographic locations worldwide. This collection of sorghum accessions/lines will be genotyped through direct resequencing, and then single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) will be identified throughout chromosomes in this diverse set of wild and cultivated sorghum accessions. The evolutionary history of domesticated sorghum will be assessed by a diffusion-based approach, and the genetic variations and relationships among these representative sorghum collection will be determined based on molecular evidences obtained from this study and previously published databases. Finally, genomic regions and/or molecular markers responsible for the variation in the important agronomic traits will be interpreted association mapping technology.
This cooperative research project was initiated this year. The first important step was to develop a core collection that will allow us to achieve the research goal of the project. Thus, we have successfully collected 350 accessions that are good representative samples of genetic diversity of world collection of sorghum. Among this core collection, 300 accessions were from diverse sources of sorghum maintained in the US, and the other 40 accessions were obtained from China. All of them were planted in the field trials in this season to evaluate their phenotypic characteristics.
