The long term goal of this project is the development of rapid, reliable, and sensitive diagnostic assays for the identification of insect transmitted viruses, arboviruses, that are suitable for use in veterinary diagnostic laboratories, as well as in the field for use during times of natural or intentionally caused disease epidemics.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
The ARS and KSU have and are developing assays for detecting genetic material, antigen or antibodies to viruses using a variety of diagnostic formats on a manual laboratory scale. The approach is to evaluate these assays on diagnostic specimens in conjunction with the standard assays used in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Those assays that are found to be acceptable then will be further optimized and automated for a high-throughput scale. The primary focus of the proposed studies will be the demonstration and evaluation of new diagnostic assays for arboviruses, followed by the translation of these to validated tests to be used by veterinary diagnosticians.
This project was initiated to develop, expedite the evaluation and standardization of arbovirus diagnostic assays. This project has resulted in technology exchange between ARS and KSU. The ARS multiplex real-time Reverse - Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction genetic amplification assay for bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease viruses has been transferred to VDL for high-throughput adaptation.
This research supports NP103 Action Plan Components 1. Biodefense Research, and 3. Prevent and Control Zoonotic Diseases.
ADODR is directly involved in performance of the research and also monitors activities to evaluate research progress through site visits, meeting at conferences and through email and phone calls.
