Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF SENSORS FOR INSTANTANEOUS ASSESSMENT OF PEANUT POD MOISTURE

Location: Peanut Research

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop and test, in different environmental conditions, sensors to rapidly and nondestructively determine the moisture content in peanuts.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Sensors, suitable for use in laboratory conditions, will be developed and tested at NPRL. Sensors suitable for field and industry use, will be developed in Australia and tested at two different locations.

3.Progress Report:

This research relates to in-house objective 1: Determine spectral response characteristics (near infrared, visible, ultraviolet, and radio spectra)of in-shell and shelled peanuts related to various quality parameters such as oil chemistry, maturity, moisture content, protein, flavor and seed viability.

Several varieties of peanuts grown in Australia were tested at their laboratories in Kinagaroy, Queensland, Australia with the collaborators on my moisture meter. The sample stream came from the 2011 harvest. The instrument performed well for moisture determination when the moisture values measured with my instrument on in-shell peanuts were compared with the standard air-oven values. Further improvements of the sensors are underway both here and in Australia to adopt the machine for peanut oil determination. Initial trials done for oil predictions made in Australia during my visit in May 2012 were very promising. More tests are planned in both countries for commercializing the instrument for oil determination in peanuts.
