Research Project: CYTOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF AGROSTIS

Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
We will acquire the basic knowledge of Agrostis genome relationships based on chromosome pairing and banding studies to differentiate the genomes of cultivated members of this genus. This information will be used by ARS to develop through classical breeding Agrostis germplasm with enhanced sustainability. The Cooperator will evaluate selections for possible germplasm release.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Investigate the genome pairing and banding of cultivated Agrostis species.

3.Progress Report:

Cytogenetic studies in Agrostis have focused on both mitotic and meiotic chromosomes. Mitotic chromosomes are being used to establish ploidy levels and to band chromosomes for use in karyotyping. Meiotic chromosomes have been studied to determine chromosome pairing behavior and to identify chromosomal abnormalities that may be influencing fertility and seed yield.
