2012 Annual Report 1a.Objectives (from AD-416): To establish research collaboration in plant germplasm and technology exchange that is mutually beneficial in the evaluation, characterization, identification and preservation of cultivated and indigenous plant genetic resources. 1b.Approach (from AD-416): ARS and the Cooperator will exchange propagating material (true seed, budwood)of tropical and subtropical crops following recommended phytosanitary procedures, including quarantine. Materials will be increased in the greenhouse or field for future testing and evaluation for specific traits(e.g. disease resistance, enhanced yield and fruit quality)of interest or as commercial cultivars. DNA fingerprinting work will be conducted to assess genetic diversity. GRIN training will be provided if deemed necessary by both parties. 3.Progress Report: The objectives of the agreement correspond with objective 1 of the parent project: Evaluate tropical/sub-tropical fruit production systems and germplasm for broad agroenvironmental adaptation, high yield and productivity, and ability to produce fruits of superior quality. A shipment of 546 seeds of Myrica rubra cultivar Biqi and 314 seed of cultivar Dong Kui from Fumin county, China was received from the South West Forestry University (SWFU), Division of International Cooperation and Exchange, at Kuming, Yunnan, China on March 21, 2012. This successful exchange was possible due to the cooperator’s effort at the SWFU working with the Ministry of Agriculture in China.
