Obesity Risk Assessment Tools
Obesity and Metabolism Research Unit
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop tools for assessing risk of obesity, and to evaluate an education intervention in head start children.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Cooperative Extension at UCDavis will conduct the field study. WHNRC will collect blood samples and analyze at least 3 nutrition biomarkers from 130 children, times 4 samples each.
This project relates to Objective 1 of the in-house project to “determine the effects of specific foods, nutrients, and food components that promote health and disease prevention in at-risk populations". Our collaborators at University of California (UC), Davis, are nearing the final stages of the their round of collecting blood samples from children in the Head Start program in Sacramento. The decision was taken to start the analysis of samples from the first two rounds, and these analyses have been substantially completed. The last round of samples will be analyzed in early 2014 and publications prepared throughout 2014.
