Research Project: Obesity risk assessment tools

Location: Obesity and Metabolism Research Unit

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop tools for assessing risk of obesity, and to evaluate an education intervention in head start children.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Cooperative Extension at UCDavis will conduct the field study. WHNRC will collect blood samples and analyze at least 3 nutrition biomarkers from 130 children, times 4 samples each. Documents Reimbursable with UC-Davis(AFRI). Log 41555.

3.Progress Report:

This research contributes to objective 2A of the in-house parent project. More than 200 children are enrolled in this study and approximately 150 samples were analyzed for glucose and lipid panels in FY12. In early FY13 when 3 samples have been collected from each of a substantial number of children, we shall start analysis of other metabolites. The fourth sample from each child is not planned until 12 months after the third, and there may not be sufficient funds for that to be collected and analyzed. Thus it is likely that most of the laboratory analyses will be completed by the end of FY13.
