Research Project: OAT SNP DEVELOPMENT & IDENTIFICATION OF LOCI AFFECTING KEY TRAITS IN NORTH AMERICAN OAT GERMPLASM USING BYDV & CROWN RUST TESTING Project Number: 5366-21000-028-21
Project Type: General Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 01, 2010
End Date: Aug 31, 2012

Objective:
The objective of this research will be to evaluate the oat association mapping population for resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and crown rust.

Approach:
Hill plots for all 685 oat association mapping lines, along with spring and winter checks, will be grown in replicated field plots (three hills of 10 plants each spaced 30 cm apart; two hills infested with 30+ viruliferous (BYDV and CYDV) aphids and one hill noninfested (control). All hills, control and infested, will be covered with cups ventilated with fine mesh screen to prevent movement of aphids. Aphids will be destroyed 3-5 days after infestation. Plants within hills will be rated for tolerance to BYDV and data will be recorded. In addition 1-m-row plots, two replications, of each oat line will be grown for crown rust evaluations. The oat line P8669, known as susceptible to Puccinia coronate will be inoculated and will serve as disease spreader onto the test plots. Disease ratings will be collected at the appropriate times and data will be collected. All data will be uploaded and checked prior to association analyses. Documents Grant with Purdue University.
