Research Project: ENHANCEMENT OF NATIVE FRUIT AND NUT ARBORETUM IN SOUTH KYRGYZSTAN

Location: National Germplasm Resources

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Support the enhancement of the existing Dendropark as a benefit-sharing project for providing access to the indigenous genetic resources of Kyrgyzstan by ARS scientists in 2009.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Set up the grant and provide funding to support the enhancement of the Dendropark. The cooperator will then properly prepare, plant and maintain the new planting site. The cooperator will provide the necessary labor and supplies to support planting, weeding, pruning, pest control, irrigation, labeling, mapping and other necessary activities to maintain and enhance the overall planting, using funds from outside of this grant.

3.Progress Report

In FY 2011, planting of the new section of the existing Fruit and Nut Arboretum (Dendropark) designed for the conservation and study of variant forms of native walnut trees was completed. In addition, a new planting on the grounds of Osh Technological University, Kyrgyzstan, using extra trees not needed for the Dendropark was established. This project provided access to USDA scientists to document and collect plant genetic resources from the native fruit and nut forests of Kyrgyzstan in 2009, and also benefitted Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to conserve its genetic resources. Efforts were also made for the Kyrgyz collaborator to attend the First International Symposium on Crop Wild Relatives for Temperate and Sub-Tropical Fruits and Nuts, Davis California. Unfortunately, a visa could not be obtained in time for him to travel to the U.S. and attend the meeting. All activities within this agreement were monitored by e-mail.
