2010 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To provide the evidence base for improving the vitamin and mineral status of lactating women and their infants.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Measure vitamin and mineral status of lactating women and their infants, given a placebo vs. a micronutrient-rich, lipid-based supplement; existing samples will be used from 300 women-infant pairs in Malawi. Documents Trust with N. Carolina State. Log 39801.
The objective is to determine the effect of high dose micronutrient supplementation on growth, nutritional status and development of young children in Malawi, in a population with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. WHNRC assisted in the design of the study and analysis of biomarkers, and will assist in manuscript preparation and data analysis. Work takes place by conference calls and emails. Samples have been received for analyses. Analyses have started for CRP, AGP and sTransferrin receptor analyses on the Integra. Funding for the WHNRC is through a subcontract from the University or North Carolina, which is funded by the Gates Foundation.
