Research Project: Evaluation of Soil Quality Parameters (Sqp) in Tropical Soils and Assessment of Elemental Composition in Tropical Crops

Location: Sustainable Perennial Crops

Project Number: 1245-21000-278-03
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 25, 2010
End Date: Jan 14, 2015

Objective:
ARS is interested in determining chemical properties in tropical soils and in the assessment of elemental composition of tropical plants.

Approach:
1. Soil and tropical crops samples will be collected from field studies carried out in Peru and Brazil and will be transported to the Indian River Research and Education Center (IRREC)/ University of Florida, Fort Pierce, FL and TARS, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. 2. Coordinate with ARS and IRREC-University of FL to develop analytical protocol for soil chemical [pH, C, N, macro and micro nutrients N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Zn, Cu, Fe, B, Mn, etc.)] and biological (microbial biomass- of C, N, P) properties. 3. Coordinate with ARS and IRREC-University of FL to develop Plant analytical protocol for determination of mineral compositions (C, N, Ca, Mg, K, P, Na, S, Al, Zn, Cu, B, Fe, Mn, etc.) (cacao, cover crops) 4. Soil and plant (cacao, cover crops) samples will be collected from experiments conducted at SPCL facilities at Beltsville, MD. These soil and plant samples will be analyzed for macro and micronutrients (N, C, Ca, Mg, K, P, Na, Al, Zn, Cu, B, Fe, Mn, etc.)
