The objective of this research will be to evaluate the oat association mapping population for resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV).
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Hill plots for all 685 oat association mapping lines will be grown in replicated field plots along with spring and winter checks. The hill plots will be inoculated at the appropriate times with virus containing aphids. Plants within hills will be rated for BYDV symptoms at various times and data will be recorded. The data will be upload and checked prior to association analyses.
This is the final report for the project. During the life of the project a total of 685 spring and winter oat lines were evaluated for barley yellow dwarf virus resistance in Illinois for two years. The disease was introduced through artificial inoculation. Data was sent to the CORE database for association mapping analysis. After analysis, this data may enable plant breeders to more efficiently screen for resistance to barley yellow dwarf disease of oat. Progress was made on the objective, which fall under National Program 301, Component 1, Plant and Microbial Genetic Resource Management, and Component 2, Crop Informatics, Genomics, and Genetic Analyses. Progress on this project focuses on problem of assessment of disease resistance of oat lines. Collection of the second year of BYDV phenotypic data was completed. As part of the oat CORE AFRI project we evaluated BYDV tolerance in 1550 hills in the 2011 season. The data on the hills were summarized and submitted to a scientist. Evaluations include planting the hills, rearing the aphids to infect the hills with barley yellow dwarf virus, maintaining the plots during the growing season, taking the BYDV tolerance evaluation ratings, and summarizing the data for submission. Results support Objective 3 in the parent project plan, development of improved oat lines.
