DEVELOP RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN PROFITABLE LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS FOR UNDERGRADUATE AGRICULTURAL STUDENTS
Forage and Livestock Production Unit
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objectives of this cooperative research project are to develop more profitable approaches to ruminant livestock production, provide educational opportunities in livestock and forage management for students enrolled in an agricultural undergraduate program, and expose students to science and agricultural research.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
New approaches to forage livestock systems will be envisioned and jointly evaluated in laboratory and field research. ARS will facilitate educational opportunities in livestock and forage management for students enrolled in an agricultural undergraduate program by lending expertise and sharing access to facilities and land, and exposing students to science and agricultural research.
Two students have completed an internship working with cattle husbandry and searching the literature for relevant data. One student compiled data into a database for use in developing new NRC model. Students gained experience in animal management, as well as proper conduct and implementation of research, data collection, and data management.
