Research Project: PHASE II- INTROGRESSION OF NOVEL SCN RESISTANCE GENES INTO SOYBEAN GERMPLASM OF EARLY MATURITY GROUPS

Location: Crop Genetics Research Unit

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Introgress novel SCN resistance genes into desirable agronomic backgrounds of early maturity groups using traditional breeding methods and marker assisted selection.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Populations and lines will be developed using different sources of resistance identified by the Co-Principal Investigator. Crosses will be made between new sources or lines of Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) resistance and experimental elite ISU lines developed by the Principal Investigator. Selections include greenhouse bioassays and marker assisted breeding for SCN resistance and field evaluations for superior performance.

3.Progress Report

Additional crosses were made for broadening resistance in soybean of early maturity groups, primarily II and III which are adapted to the Midwest area. Genetically diverse source of resistance that has been identified at USDA-ARS, Jackson, TN, worksite was used in the crosses. PI507354 soybean line that is diverse from Peking, PI88788 and cv. Hartwig was crossed to elite cultivar IA1008 that was developed by Iowa State University (ISU). Selections were made for soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistance and resistant progenies were evaluated in preliminary yield trials at USDA-ARS, Jackson, TN, and further yield tests are being conducted by ISU for its release.
