Research Project: Effects of Animal Source Foods on Vitamin and Mineral Status in Kenya

Location: Obesity and Metabolism Research Unit

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To determine the effect of increasing animal source food intake on the nutritional status of Kenyan women and their children.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Serum samples will be collected by staff hired by Indiana University in Kenya. The samples will be analyzed for micronutrient content at the WHNRC, using radioassays and high pressure liquid chromatography.

3.Progress Report

200 HIV positive women and their infants have been enrolled in this study over a 2 year period. The women and children have been supplemented with meat, soy or wheat protein for a year in order to evaluate whether the supplements lower viral regression and improve micronutrient status. The feeding trial ended in April of 2011, and the samples will be shipped to the WHNRC in August 2011. Analyses to be completed on the 1200 samples in FY2012 include vitamin B12, folate, zinc, retinol, ferritin, transferrin receptors, and possibly methylmalonic acid.
