Research Project: EFFECTS OF ANIMAL SOURCE FOODS ON VITAMIN AND MINERAL STATUS IN KENYA

2010 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To determine the effect of increasing animal source food intake on the nutritional status of Kenyan women and their children.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Serum samples will be collected by staff hired by Indiana University in Kenya. The samples will be analyzed for micronutrient content at the WHNRC, using radioassays and high pressure liquid chromatography.


3.Progress Report

Recruitment in the country has been in process for the past two years. All subjects have been recruited, about 70% have completed the 12 months of supplementation, and the remainder will complete in early 2011. No samples have been shipped to the WHNRC but the first complete batch will arrive December 2010 for analysis.
