2013 Annual Report
Raspberry: In 2013, 89 raspberry crosses were made for cultivar development, an additional five crosses were made for research studies. Seedlings from 2012 crosses were planted in the field at Washington State University (WSU) Puyallup. Forty-one preliminary selections have been made among the raspberry seedlings planted in 2011. A new machine harvesting planting to evaluate machine-harvestability of raspberry selections was established in 2013 with a cooperating grower with 67 WSU selections, 25 BC selections, five Oregan State University and USDA (ORUS) selections and Lewis, Meeker and Willamette as standards for comparison. This planting will be machine harvested in 2014 and 2015. The machine harvested plantings established in 2010 and 2011 are being evaluated weekly during the 2013 season beginning July 1. A replicated planting was established at WSU Puyallup of 12 WSU selections and Meeker and Willamette, which will be evaluated for the first time in 2015. Replicated root rot evaluation plots at WSU Puyallup have been planted. These evaluations will provide information on field tolerance to severe levels of root rot. Selections were tested by graft inoculation of RBDV to determine if they were resistant or susceptible to RBDV.
Strawberry: In 2013, 52 strawberry crosses were made and seedlings from these crosses will be planted in 2014. Seedlings from the 2012 crosses were planted in the field at WSU Puyallup. Twenty-eight strawberry selections were made in 2013 among the strawberry seedlings planted in 2012. A planting was established in 2013 with replicated plots of eight cultivars, two WSU selections, two ORUS selections and one British Columbia selection and non-replicated plots of 40 WSU selections, two cultivars and one ORUS selection. The plantings established in 2011 and 2012 were harvested in 2013, but data has not been analyzed yet. Selections with promise will be propagated and planted in a new selection trial for additional evaluation.
