Research Project: APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY TO CONTROL THE SCN

2012 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To control the soybean cyst nematode using new approaches including molecular biology and transformation techniques.


1b.Approach (from AD-416):
DNA vectors will be designed for transformation of DNA fragments into soybean to control the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) so that it will not grow or will not complete its life cycle. The transformed soybean roots will be tested to determine the effect of the DNA fragments on SCN vigor.


3.Progress Report:

Ten DNA constructs were made to over-express soybean genes in transformed soybean roots. The transformed roots were challenged with soybean cyst nematodes. After more than 35 days, mature female nematodes were counted. One gene decreased the number of mature female nematodes more than 50% compared to controls. This approach may be useful to broaden resistance of plants to nematodes.
