Research Project: DEVELOP NOVEL REDUCED RISK PUBLIC HEALTH PESTICIDES AND INSECT REPELLENTS

Location: Invasive Insect Biocontrol and Behavior Laboratory

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Identification and utilization of new fast acting insecticides in public health is in urgent need to curb arthropod vector born diseases. We have developed a number of novel chemical entities for testing. Testing these novel compounds for product development, along with their primary toxicological evaluation through Sixpack study is the essential first step. Each sixpack study requires 90-100 grams of compound. Seek to obtain the chemically pure compounds and then to evaluate their toxicological profiles.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Develop large scale synthesis of complex chemical entities to produce the compounds and then evaluate their toxicological profile. Develop large scale synthesis of chemical compound affecting insect behavior.

3.Progress Report:

This research is directed at the synthesis, supply, and the screening of repellent compounds originally developed by ARS scientists. Based on the agreement, the company has performed toxicological screenings of four novel compounds developed by ARS. Each candidate compound was synthesized in sufficient quantities, so that after toxicological evaluations have been completed the test compounds can be further screened against blood feeding mosquitoes under field conditions. The project team is comprised of synthetic/computational chemists, medical entomologist, and industrial partners.
